Here are just a few things you should know about Nervous Nellie’s that makes it such a precious piece of island culture here on Deer Isle.
The Beginning of Nervous Nellie’s Maine
Nervous Nellie’s Maine is grounded in 30 years of business, originally selling products to Dean & Deluca, which in turn was placed on the shelves of Tony Atkinson’s Market in Ketchum, Idaho, and on the breakfast table of the Wrigley Mansion on Catalina Island. But today, 90 percent of the products made in Nervous Nellie’s Maine 375-square-foot “factory” on Deer Isle, also known as the JK or Jelly Kitchen, are sold right at the unusual storefront. The same small batches that the business began with are still being created!
And what about that name?! Who is Nervous Nellie? Nellie is the whimsical creation of owner Peter Beerits, a stork-like bird who is always chasing after razzie the raspberry to turn him into something delicious. She is the official mascot of the company and you can even read about her many adventures through a series of comical reads created by Peter.
Cottage Industry or Living Museum?
Nervous Nellie’s Maine is a true cottage industry, as it is actually located in a cottage! It is also a quirky living museum featuring local island life and culture. The space includes a magical folk art sculpture garden as well as a colorful shop stocked with handmade sweets and a tea room with handcrafted goodies. There is a sandbox with toys, a kettle-boiling kitchen, and a deck perfect for relaxing in the sun and sipping on a mug of coffee or tea. Nervous Nellie’s Maine is a place for eclectic, ecstatic, and eccentric conversations and for people to gather and unite over a common love for delicious local treats.
The sculpture garden at Nervous Nellie’s Maine is a sure centerpiece with unique, edgy exhibits created by sculptor Peter Beerits. These life-size sculptures channel the energy of Nervous Nellie’s Maine with installations such as the Grail Castle, a still-evolving Western town. There are also dozens of figurines and creatures, from knights and dragons to a lobster and tuna playing checkers. There is even a 10-foot-tall pink flamingo. The true spirit of Nervous Nellie’s Maine is alive in this sculpture garden.
