What You Will See at the Deer Isle Artists Association

Art is not only the result of creative expression, it’s a way of life in Deer Isle, Maine. You’ll find dozens of painters, sculptors, printmakers, jewelers, photographers and more on our small island community. One organization helping to facilitate art appreciation and professional development for artists, is the Deer Isle Artists Association (DIAA). Located directly across the street from Pilgrim’s Inn, this 40-year-old member-owned association manages the organization’s gallery, promotes art exhibits, and conducts community outreach. Along with exhibits and a gallery, the Deer Isle Artists Association conducts a variety of workshops throughout the year, including a series of presentations entitled ART matters. Deer Isle Artists Association Exhibitions

The DIAA gallery exhibits change every two weeks during the summer months and feature a variety of media from local artists. The gallery is open from 10am to 6pm daily. Receptions to meet the artists are held on the first Sunday after an exhibit opens, from 4 to 6pm. There are often themed exhibitions, such as the current “Light to be Discovered” display. This exhibit features a variety of artists as they reflect on the idea of light in their work.

The Gallery

Your visit to the Deer Isle Artists Association will give you just a taste of the talent that exists within the Deer Isle artist community. During the summer, the gallery features a new exhibit every two weeks, showcasing as much talent as possible. During your stay you might just find that one-of-a-kind piece of art that grabs your attention and won’t let go! If you’re looking for a special gift or a reminder of your time on Deer Isle, then the Deer Isle Artists Association gallery should be on your list of places to visit! Included in the gallery is a 12x12x12 all-member exhibition, featuring all artwork that fits the small format. In 2016, over 70 artists responded to the challenge, submitting 241 works of art for the gallery. Each are for sale at just $144. This installation has been one of the most popular exhibits to date!

Meet the Artists

The Deer Isle Artists Association features over 100 artists. You can find links to members’ pages as well as images of their work on the DIAA website. The online portfolio of artists includes beautiful paintings of Deer Isle landscapes, quirky outdoor sculptures, local photography, and more! You will discover the work of artists like Peter Beerits, who created the sculpture gardens at Nervous Nellie’s, or Jerry Levitt, who takes beautiful nature photography.
