Downeast Maine is known for its organic farms, fresh seafood, and eco-friendly agricultural practices on the coastal environment. Several movements have surfaced to protect the gorgeous natural setting of the Downeast coast and make sure it is preserved for generations to come. The Good Life Movement is one of these. Dedication to living closer to the land in Brooksville inspired a generation of idealists to move to Maine for a better life. This Back-to-the-Land Movement started as farm-to-table, sustainable agriculture and evolved into passionate homesteaders returning to their roots. Fine Line Farm
We buy local produce from Fine Line Farm, an initiative in Searsmont, Maine, founded by Sarah Tompkins and Hubert McCabe. Working with Maine Farmland Trust, Tompkins and McCabe purchased the 90-acre working farm from a couple who had lived on the property for 22 years. Now, Fine Line Farm features over 200 varieties of greens, edible flowers and vegetables, fruiting trees, and even chickens. Rye, vetch, oats, and peas are just a few yields, while the other greens provide some truly amazing, fresh flavors to our daily dishes!
Yellow Birch Farm
MOFGA Certified organic produce, as well as homemade dairy products, are available at Yellow Birch Farm right here on Deer Isle. The produce and other yields from Yellow Birch Farm are available at a variety of farmers’ markets along the Downeast Coast. These include the Night Market right next to our inn, the Deer Isle Farmers’ Market, and the Stonington Farmers’ Market. On Tuesday, we often acquire our produce from the Yellow Birch Farm stand at the Night Market! You can also find all-natural face creams, goat milk soaps, and more great gifts here!
Red Barn Farm
We receive many of our ingredients from local, organic farms in Maine near Deer Isle. One of these is Red Barn Farm in Stonington. Here, we acquire our delicious goat cheese for our signature local cheese plate on the dinner menu nightly. At this farmstead cheesemaker, you can find fresh cheeses, goat milk soaps, yogurt, and even lobsters. This small farm environment has some adorable animals and a great farm stand on-site that sells seasonal products.
Another great selection from local vendors in Maine near Deer Isle is Stonington Seafood. We get our smoked fish supply from Richard Penfold, who cures and smokes his fish in the Scottish tradition. Enjoy a characteristic glossy, light golden cure with no sugar, color, or preservatives in our signature Smoked Cod and Clam Chowder dish at the Inn!
