This is How to Get a Bird’s Eye View During the Wings Waves & Woods Festival

There are some splendid annual birding festivals in Maine, from the popular Downeast Spring Birding Festival to the Wings Waves & Woods Festival. Both of these unique birding experiences are ideal for nature lovers visiting the Acadia National Park. Discover some of the incredible wildlife within the park, including a variety of feathered friends and diverse ecosystems. Hosted by the Island Heritage Trust, the three-day Wings Waves & Woods Festival features the perfect opportunity to experience guided birding trips along the rugged Maine coast. Search for returning migrants along with species that have not yet left for breeding in the Arctic! We know you will love the one-of-a-kind experience that the Wings Waves & Woods Festival offers.

What You Will Experience During the Wings Waves & Woods Festival

This magnificent three-day birding festival offers a great opportunity for both beginning and experienced birders. Enjoy guided trips that explore the Downeast Maine coast in search for a variety of birds. Boat trips provide opportunities to see Great Cormorants, Atlantic Puffins, Purple Sandpipers, Black Guillemots, and many more birds! The weekend doesn’t just feature birding adventures, though. There are also a variety of other events scattered throughout the festival. These include an opening art reception featuring birds and their habitats as well as live art shows, expert-led bird walks, and workshops.

Enjoy a Coffee Break During the Festival Right Here at the Inn

The Wings Waves & Woods Festival provides several opportunities to experience Downeast Maine birds in their natural environments. However, the festival is full of other unique events that might also pique your interest. One such event, the coffee break at 9:30am on May 20, is hosted right here at Pilgrim’s Inn! Join fellow birders at the inn for $5 coffee and pastries and soak in our spacious grounds. The mill pond, heirloom orchard trees, and gardens are all great habitats for regional birds.

Some of Our Favorite Events on the Schedule This Year

Here are just some of our favorites in anticipation of the 2017 festival! The Found Object Sculpture will involve local art hero Peter Beerits creating bird sculptures from scrap wood and metal. A Night Serenade on the first evening involves a moonlit stroll listening for thrushes, sparrows, and other songbirds. View nesting eagles on May 20 of the festival before enjoying a bird’s eye flight with Penobscot Island Air. You might also enjoy the Brush Painting Birds art workshop or the birder’s supper at Harbor Cafe. The last day of the Maine birding festival includes birding by kayak and a discussion about landscaping for birds and butterflies. The last event of the day is a walk and talk featuring the healing qualities of wildflowers and herbs.
