History of the New Surry Theater
After being founded in 1872, the New Surry Theatre began as an acting school and culminated with 10 sold-out performances of Fiddler on the Roof in a rustic barn. Year-round acting classes, summer theater camps, and repertory seasons were highlights of the ‘70s and ‘80s in Downeast Maine. Held in Blue Hill, Deer Isle, Ellsworth, and other Maine towns, these events attracted many aspiring actors and served as an outlet for at-risk youth. Full-length musicals began in the 1990s, while the 2000s brought a travelling show of OKLAHOMA! Now, the New Surry Theatre is a cultural gem. Here, locals and visitors can enjoy a slice of the local arts and entertainment scene.
Experience The Radio Show
One of the most well-known acts you can see at the New Surry Theatre is The Radio Show. Back in 2005, the theater took classic episodes of The Adventures of Superman from the ‘30s and ‘40s and decided to perform them. Now, they hold these “radio shows” throughout the entire year! You’ll feel as if you have traveled back in time when you listen to these old-fashioned shows complete with fun sound effects and commercials. At the moment, tickets are $35 for dinner and the entertainment. Just make a reservation!
The New Surry Theatre Performing Arts School
Not only does the New Surry Theatre serve as an entertainment venue, it is also a renowned performing arts school. There are a variety of different classes offered each semester that are open to both inexperienced and experienced adult students. The last classes of the semester are always open house performances. They bring the community together for the ultimate showcase of the students’ hard work!
