What to Do on the Schoodic Peninsula

Hiking & Nature

If you’re looking for a peaceful place to escape and enjoy the quiet solitude of nature, then Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park is where you want to go. There are a variety of trails for hiking, birding, and wandering. You can expect stunning views of Cadillac Mountain. The hikes here will take you to locations such as Schoodic Point at the southern tip of the peninsula, with granite outcroppings, splashing surf, thick spruce, and jack pine. If you’re looking to pack a picnic and eat on the go, then Frazer Point is an ideal destination. Here, you will discover picnic tables, fire rings for roasting marshmallows, a 40-foot pier, restrooms, and drinking water. The main views from the point include Winter Harbor, the coves, and the offshore islands.

Art & Culture

This peninsula offers some incredible natural views but also features art galleries, music, and shopping among its charming fishing villages. There is a vibrant arts scene along the Schoodic Peninsula, from galleries to studios to shops that feature some incredible pieces by local artisans. Bunkers Wharf, Prospect Harbor, and downtown Winter Harbor all host some of these lovely galleries for perusing and purchasing local art. There are also a variety of shops, where you just might discover the perfect handmade souvenir to bring back from your vacation. Historic Hammond Hall in Winter Harbor is also a great place for art exhibits, concerts, and a variety of performances throughout the year. You might just catch a great local band or a theatrical performance while you are wandering through.

Schoodic Scenic Byway

Because of its stunning, untouched panoramic views, the Peninsula is a great place to go on a scenic drive. The Schoodic Scenic Byway is a 29-mile-long road that winds through the region and into the adjoining section of Acadia National Park. Beautiful falls, ocean and mountain views, working lobster boats, and distant lighthouses are all sights you will see along the byway. If you peer far enough, you will even see other islands in the distance off the coast of Maine. The byway travels through the small villages of Sullivan, Gouldsboro, Birch Harbor, Winter Harbor, and Prospect Harbor.
