Why the Turtle Gallery Needs to Be on Your To-Do List

Maine’s Deer Isle is a great little corner of New England, surrounded by natural beauty and a vibrant arts scene. There’s no better way to immerse yourself in the local culture than by visiting artist studios in the area. Turtle Gallery is one of our favorites. This unique gallery is built inside of a repurposed barn. It features the work of both emerging and established Maine artists. What Is the Turtle Gallery?

The Turtle Gallery, opened in 1982, is located in central Deer Isle, less than a 10-minute walk from Pilgrim’s Inn. After a period of expansion, the gallery moved to the 1876 Centennial House in 1996. Even since then, the iconic white barn features the main gallery. The connecting house offers even more space for art displays.

The sculpture gardens are some of the property’s best features. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, and the art inside expertly complements the natural beauty of the exterior. Vibrant flowers and multimedia sculptures decorate the lawn, offering a little something for every type of art lover.

What Artists and Artwork are Featured?

Throughout the season, the gallery offers several rotating shows and receptions to feature artist work. Whether you’re looking for paintings, sculptures, or ceramics, this is the place to go! Mark Bell’s exquisite pottery pieces, Mary Aro’s beachy watercolors, and Matthew Szosz’s fused window glass are just a few examples of the art on display here. The Turtle Gallery is the perfect place to buy gifts for your loved ones or special souvenirs for yourself.

Note: The Turtle Gallery is only open for its regular schedule during the summer months. Access to the gallery is available by appointment throughout the rest of the year.

What Other Art Galleries Are in the Area?

Deer Isle contains so many hidden gems of the art world, and we suggest you check out a couple of them during your vacation. The Deer Isle Artists Association is another great gallery that offers workshops to up-and-coming artists. The DIAA is a member-owned association. They manage the exhibits, conduct classes, and manage community outreach programs to promote local art. In addition, if you’re looking to get inspired during an art class, the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is the place for you. This studio has comprehensive craft media workshops for students of all skill levels.
