The Whale’s Rib Tavern – A Delicious Restaurant & Bar in Deer Isle
End your day of exploration by enjoying a relaxing and innovative meal at our Downeast Maine restaurant and bar, located in our attached rustic barn with views of the Mill Pond and grounds. Our menu always features fresh ingredients and changes seasonally. We pride ourselves on using local ingredients from organic farms and seafood caught in our local waters.
We are closed for the 2017 season, but we re-open on May 16th! Make your reservations now to make sure you get the chance to enjoy some of Chef Max Mattes’ fabulous food at The Whale’s Rib Tavern.
The Whale’s Rib Tavern is popular and our dining room can book up several days in advance! The restaurant’s dining room is in our rustic barn and our cozy bar includes two tables which can also be reserved for dinner. We strongly recommend reservations for dinner as we have a small dining room and it is best to ensure you can get in to have dinner with us.
Note: Based on the size of our dining room it is difficult for us to accommodate parties over 8 people. Parties of 6 or more will have an 18% gratuity added to the check.
If you have very specific times you want a reservation or if you are with a group, it is best to call at least several days in advance. Chef Max Mattes has returned for another season with the Whale’s Rib Tavern and brings the wonderful flavor combinations that inspire the dishes, using various spices and techniques from world cuisine. Chef Mattes focuses on fresh, seasonal and local ingredients. No matter what you are craving, we have a dish that is guaranteed to satisfy!
Choose from classics like our signature seared halibut with lobster risotto or try something new like our sous vide chicken breast. Our menu includes a variety of dishes to meet the needs of diners who are seafood or steak lovers, or vegetarian. Our menu items feature different preparations and accompaniments from week to week, based on what ingredients are in season and available locally. Check out our sample menu below.
Special Diets: If you have allergies please let your server know so that those items can be avoided. We can accommodate many special dietary requirements if you let your server know in advance. Our chef will work with you to get what you need for a great meal.
- Monday – Shore dinner by ADVANCED reservation – Serving a traditional shore dinner with dessert, for a fixed price
- Tuesday – Saturday, 5:00- 8:15, full restaurant menu available

Parking for the Whale’s Rib Tavern is street-side in the Deer Isle Village. The on-site parking lot is for guests of our Inn – please be respectful of the fact that Inn guests staying for the night need to be able to park on-site when they arrive.
